Lavaste
Lavaste is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Sudeesh Kanaujia. The film addresses the neglect and mistreatment faced by elderly parents in today's society. The story follows Satyansh (played by Omkar Kapoor), an engineering graduate from Raipur who moves to Mumbai in search of a job to support his family. After struggling for a year, he resorts to transporting unclaimed dead bodies to the crematory for money. This unsettling new job makes him question societal patterns where some children get so busy chasing their dreams that they neglect their aging parents. The film has an empathetic lead character and tackles a relevant issue that is often discussed in households - who will look after you when you get old? The director takes a minimalist approach in portraying the struggles faced by the elderly, allowing the audience to connect with their plight on a deeper level. While the film's heart and intent are in the right place, the storytelling feels a bit dated and unidimensional at times. It tries to be a satire and tragicomedy but works primarily as a family drama. The script exposes the harsh realities faced by the elderly but also forces the audience to introspect on their own treatment of aging parents. Despite its low budget, Lavaste stands out as a remarkable cinematic achievement that demonstrates the power of a compelling story, skillful direction, and dedicated performances. The film leaves a deep impact on the minds of viewers and has the potential to reshape societal norms regarding the treatment of the elderly
